Before installing your Autometer shift lite remember that doing a clean installation is important to making you installation a quality one. And before you get all happy and are ready to open that bag of 6700-7200 rpm chips remember this The shift lite will do you no good coming on at 6700 rpm's when the rev limiter kicks in at 6000. If you have a chip then you are good to 7000. But once you get the 6700 and the light goes on there is no doubt that you will already have hit the rev limiter and looked pretty stupid. The light comes with a 3000 rpm chip. And for all of you that are bummed because you have a 4 cylinder and not the vr6, don't be because you don't need that bag of chips that ran you 30 bucks. Take the switch in the back and set it to 8 cylinder and it will light up at 6000 rpm's which is the perfect time to not embarrass yourself and loose a race. Hitting the rev limiter can cost you tenth's of a second on the track and a lost race on the street. For you with vr6's, Well it's too bad but you are gonna have to buy the chips ( But there are probably many other 4 cylinder guys that you can teach this trick to and probably buy their chips for half the price. So with all of that out of the way lets get to the installation.
1. take the light and mount it to the dash or wherever else you would like to mount it.
2. Run all three wires down the side of the dash and tuck them behind the flexible plastic strip
3. take the green wire and run it through the fire wall and attach it to the small red and black wire going into the coil. This wire is what is called a pulse wire and gives of the pulse to the coil to tell it when to spark and now to your shift light to tell it how many revolutions the engine is turning at. We recommend using a scotch lock or another type of connector that does not require you cutting the coil wire lead.
4. Take the red wire and run it down to the fuse block. Remove the door ajar buzzer. remove your key from the ignition. Take your test light and find which of the connections in the fuse block is not hot. Now insert your key close all the doors and turn the key to the on position. If the test light lights up then that is the connection that will now be powering your shift light. push the wire in the connector and then reinsert the relay.
5. Take the black wire and attach it to a good ground source (I.E. metal) We find a good source under the dash in the bottom left corner or the dash.
6. Now remove your key and reinsert it. Start the vehicle. The light should light up briefly then go out. (Do not rev the engine to 6000 rpm's to test the light. If It lit up it will most likely work. Take the car out for a test drive and see if the shift light operates correctly. The reason for not revving it up and testing it is that revving the engine without a load (I.E. sticking your foot to the floor) can cause severe engine damage.
7. Enjoy your shift lite and all the lower quarter mile times that come with it
